GRE General is required (or recommended) for many US, Canadian, and select European Master's and PhD programs, especially in STEM, humanities, and behavioural sciences. While many top universities went GRE-optional during 2020–2024, GRE is back in demand at MIT, Stanford, CMU, Cornell, Columbia, and most engineering Master's at strong US schools. Our 8-week intensive targets 320+ — the threshold for most top-30 US programs.

GRE structure (current short version)

The GRE was shortened in September 2023. Current structure:

  • Analytical Writing — 1 task, 30 minutes, scored 0–6 in 0.5 increments.
  • Verbal Reasoning — 2 sections, 27 questions, 41 minutes. Reading comprehension, text completion, sentence equivalence.
  • Quantitative Reasoning — 2 sections, 27 questions, 47 minutes. Algebra, geometry, data analysis, basic stats.

Total test: ~1 hr 58 min. Verbal: 130–170. Quant: 130–170. Total scaled: 260–340.

Our GRE pedagogy

  • Diagnostic first — mock test on day 1 to identify your starting score and section-wise strengths.
  • Quant first, then Verbal — Quant is the lever for Indian students (most score 165+ on Quant; the limit is Verbal). We build Quant to 168+ then push Verbal from there.
  • Vocabulary boot camp — 50 high-frequency GRE words per week, taught in context.
  • Reading comprehension speed drills — most students lose Verbal points to running out of time, not difficulty.
  • Weekend full mocks — 3 mocks per course (built on real ETS PowerPrep + Manhattan + Magoosh banks).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need GRE for US Master's?
Depends on the program. STEM Master's at top schools: typically yes (MIT, CMU, Cornell, Stanford). Mid-tier and waiver-friendly programs: often optional or waived (NYU Tandon, NEU, ASU, BU, Penn State). MBA programs: GMAT preferred over GRE (though most top MBAs accept either). We'll list per-program at shortlisting.
What's a good GRE score?
Top 10 US programs: 325+ (V160+, Q165+). Top 30: 318+. Top 50: 310+. Quant is more important than Verbal for STEM (Q168+ ideal). For humanities/social sciences, Verbal weighs more (V160+ is critical).
How long should I prepare for GRE?
8–12 weeks for most students. If your starting diagnostic is below 295, plan 12+ weeks. If 305+, 6–8 weeks of focused prep can push you to 320+.
Can I take GRE multiple times?
Yes — every 21 days, up to 5 times per year. ScoreSelect lets you choose which test scores to send to which schools. Most students take it 1–2 times.
Should I take GRE General or GRE Subject?
GRE General for almost everyone — required by most programs. GRE Subject (Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Literature in English) is required only by specific PhD programs (especially in Math, Physics). Check program-by-program.
