The United States hosts the largest population of Indian international students in the world — over 330,000 currently — for one main reason: access to the world's best universities and the world's largest technology and research job market. STEM graduates can stay and work for up to 3 years on Optional Practical Training (OPT), and from there transition to H-1B and Green Card. The US route is more expensive than Canada or UK, but for the right students, the ROI is unmatched.

Why study in United States?

World's top universities

Of the QS top 30 globally, 14 are American. MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, UChicago, Penn, Cornell, UCLA, UC Berkeley — there is no equivalent concentration of academic excellence anywhere else.

Largest tech and research ecosystem

Silicon Valley, Boston, NYC, Seattle, Austin — all within reach of US graduates. Indian-origin alumni run Google, Microsoft, Adobe, IBM, Mastercard, Pepsi, FedEx, Chanel and many more.

3-year STEM OPT post-study work

Non-STEM graduates get 12 months OPT; STEM degree holders extend that to 36 months total. During OPT, you can work for any employer in your field. Most students transition to H-1B during OPT.

Massive scholarship and assistantship pool

US Master's and PhD programs offer Teaching Assistantships (TA), Research Assistantships (RA), and Graduate Assistantships (GA) that can cover up to 100% of tuition + a stipend. Many of our students pay almost nothing for their PhD.

Diverse immigration pathways

F-1 → OPT → H-1B → Green Card is the most common route. EB-1 (extraordinary ability), EB-2 NIW (national interest waiver), and O-1 visas all favour US-educated graduates with research output.

Step-by-step student visa process for United States

  1. Get an I-20 from a SEVP-certified university
After accepting your admission and showing financial evidence, the US university issues an I-20 form. This is the primary F-1 visa document.
  2. Pay SEVIS fee (USD 350)
Pay online at fmjfee.com. Required before the visa interview.
  3. Schedule visa interview at US Embassy/Consulate
Pay MRV fee (USD 185), schedule slots in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad. Wait times currently 1–3 months.
  4. Prepare for F-1 interview
Officers focus on: ties to India (will you return?), genuine student intent, financial capability, post-study plans. Our mock interview program runs 3–5 sessions per student before the actual interview.
  5. Take English test — TOEFL / IELTS / Duolingo
Required by most universities. TOEFL 100+ (Ivy League) or 80+ (most universities). IELTS 6.5–7.5 also accepted.
  6. Show financial evidence
Affidavit of support from sponsor + bank statements + loan sanction letter showing full I-20 funds available. We help structure this.
  7. Visa interview → grant → fly + onboard
Typical interview is 3–5 minutes. Decision is given at the counter. Pre-departure briefing covers SSN, banking, on-campus housing, OPT timeline.

Post-study work and PR pathway in United States

F-1 → OPT (12 months, or 36 for STEM) → H-1B (lottery system, 3+3 years) → Green Card (EB-2/EB-3 from employer, or EB-1/EB-2 NIW for high-achievers). Realistic timeline: study (2 yrs Master's) → OPT (3 yrs STEM) → H-1B (6 yrs) → Green Card (3–10+ yrs depending on country backlog). India backlog for EB-2/EB-3 is currently very long (decades). Most fast-track via EB-1 (extraordinary ability) or EB-2 NIW (national interest), or use entrepreneur/investor visas like E-2 or O-1.

United States study abroad FAQs

How can I study in USA after 12th from India?
Apply to US undergraduate programs via the Common App by January (regular) or November (early decision/early action). You'll need SAT (1300+ for top schools) or ACT, TOEFL/IELTS, two essays (Common App + supplemental), 2–3 teacher recommendations, and academic transcripts. We do US Bachelor's applications including SAT prep, essay editing, and interview prep.
How much money do I need to study in USA?
₹34–55 lakhs/year for a public university Master's; ₹56–84 lakhs/year for Ivy League / top-private. We help secure assistantships (50–100% tuition coverage), Fulbright-Nehru, Tata, Inlaks scholarships, and collateral-free loans up to ₹50 lakhs from HDFC Credila and Prodigy Finance.
What is OPT and STEM OPT?
OPT (Optional Practical Training) is 12 months of post-study work authorisation for F-1 students. If your degree is on the official STEM list (most engineering, CS, math, sciences are), you can extend OPT by an additional 24 months — total 36 months. During OPT you work for any US employer in your field of study.
My F-1 visa was refused — can I reapply?
Yes. F-1 refusals (almost always under 214(b) — failure to demonstrate non-immigrant intent and ties to India) can be reversed by addressing the underlying issue. Most common: weak Indian ties, unclear post-study plans, financial gaps, weak SOP. We've reversed 6+ F-1 refusals since 2024 — see our visa refusal page.
How important is GRE/GMAT for US Master's?
Less than it used to be. Many top US universities (including MIT, CMU, Cornell, NYU) made GRE optional or waived for STEM Master's during 2020–2024 and many have kept it that way. GMAT is still highly relevant for top MBA. We advise on GRE/GMAT requirements per program at the shortlisting stage.
Which is better for Indian students — MS in USA or MS in Canada/UK?
USA: best for STEM, research, and tech jobs — but most expensive and longer immigration timeline. Canada: easier PR (3 years vs 10+ in US). UK: shortest (1-yr Master's), prestigious. We profile-match in your free counselling — there's no universal answer.
