Germany study abroad FAQs

Can I study in Germany for free as an Indian student?
Yes — public universities in 15 of Germany's 16 states charge zero tuition for international students. Only Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500/semester. You'll still pay €150–€350/semester contribution (which covers public transport pass, student services, etc.). So a 2-year Master's at TU Munich or RWTH Aachen costs less than ₹50,000 in tuition + €11,900 blocked account funds × 2 years living.
Do I need to know German to study in Germany?
Not for most Master's programs — 300+ are taught entirely in English. You'll need IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90+. For Bachelor's programs and PhDs, German is more often required (TestDaF 4 / DSH-2). However, learning A1/A2 German before arrival makes daily life much easier and is required for most jobs.
What is a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)?
A special bank account where you deposit €11,904 (current rate) before your visa is granted. Once in Germany, you can withdraw a maximum of €992/month (€11,904 ÷ 12). It's proof to the German government that you can support yourself for one year. Fintiba and Expatrio are the fastest providers for Indian applicants.
My Germany student visa was refused — what should I do?
Most German refusals are for: weak SOP / unclear motivation, financial documentation issues, course choice mismatch with prior education, or doubts about returning. We've reversed 3+ Germany refusals since 2024. The path is: written remonstration (formal appeal) within 30 days, addressing each ground for refusal, OR a fresh application with strengthened documentation. See our visa refusal help page.
Which German cities are best for Indian students?
Munich: best universities (TUM, LMU), strong job market, but expensive. Berlin: cheapest major city, biggest English-speaking professional community, vibrant startup scene. Aachen: home to RWTH (top engineering); small, affordable. Stuttgart: automotive engineering hub (Mercedes, Porsche, Bosch). Frankfurt: finance and banking. Hamburg: maritime, media, growing tech.
Is Germany good for an MS in Computer Science?
Excellent — TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, KIT, Saarland, Hasso Plattner Institute, and TU Darmstadt all offer top-ranked English-taught CS Master's. After graduation, the German tech market hires aggressively (SAP, Siemens, Bosch, Deutsche Telekom, plus a thriving startup scene in Berlin and Munich). Starting CS salaries: €55,000–€70,000.
